Five Minute Friday - Could

This post is part of the weekly Five Minute Friday link-up where we write for five minutes on the word of the week. This is a free write  where we simply let the words flow, no fancy editing, no over thinking, just writing.

This weeks writing prompt is - Could

There are so many things I could do! Sometimes the sheer enormity of possibilities is a little overwhelming. But not everything that could be done, should be done. So, in the moment of choice, it is important to pause, and reflect on the difference between could and should. Often we think of the word should as a bit confining, but it can also be liberating. But first, it is important for me to have a clear definition of my values and the principles that guide me in life so that I can successfully differentiate between the myriad of coulds and important should.

Because I was created for a purpose, because I was given a mission in life, my shoulds are actually liberating because they propel me toward the choices that reflect the person I am - the person I was created to be. My shoulds move me in the direction of fulfillment in God, by walking in my purpose.

  1. "the sheer enormity of possibilities is overwhelming." I can relate to this, so thank you for your good words that remind me of liberation today. Karen :) FMF #8

  2. Ah, the "myriad of coulds" overwhelm me. It's like my mind looks far beyond the fork in the road to the next fork, or even the one after that. I need to stop. Be here. Make this decision. It doesn't matter what I could do. It doesn't matter what could happen. I need to lean wholly into God.

  4. Excellent perspective, flawless writing.

There were so very many coulds,
    so temptingly presented
    that they overwhelmed the shoulds
    (which I actually resented).
I wanted to fly wide and free,
    not aviary-chained,
    and find the opportunity
that I was sure God had ordained
to be placed, wrapped in bows
    upon the path I trod,
but reaching them, I stubbed my toes
    and found it rather odd
that could was not quite so fun,
and should is what I should have done.

  6. "My shoulds move me in the direction of fulfillment in God, by walking in my purpose." beautiful ending. Yes, our fulfillment is in Him and that is where our shoulds should take us :)

  8. I relate to "the sheer enormity of possibilities" in my life. God removed my primary ministry and role of 'caregiver' when He took my sweet momma home to heaven in May. It opens a whole new world of possibilities as to what to do with this next phase of life. Thanks for posting! Visiting from FMF #36.
