Inspiration
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.
Matthew 19:14
Reading and Learning
We think in terms of getting a skill first, and then finding interesting and useful things to do with it. The sensible way, the best way, is to start with something worth doing, and then, moved by a strong desire to do it, get whatever skills are needed.
John Holt, How Children Learn
Today Michael did his online schoolwork, worked at the Calvary Food Pantry, and attended a youth meeting via Zoom.
Today the preschoolers were thrilled to begin working in new workbooks. While they worked in their books Michael and Aaron colored dinosaurs.
This afternoon it was Kylin's turn to choose our game and he chose Alphabet Bingo. We played three rounds before it was time to go outside.
Outdoor Fun
Today it was cloudy and cool outside. We had fun playing with cars, dump trucks and balls, watching the chickens, and petting and running with the puppies.
In the Kitchen
My kitchen helpers worked hard this morning. Kylin helped me make a beef and rice casserole for lunch and Michael made scrambled eggs for breakfast.
Fried cornmeal mush, scrambled eggs, bananas and orange juice for breakfast; Beef and rice, carrots, and applesauce for lunch; and more beef and rice and sauteed brussel sprouts and onions for dinner.
On My Mind
I've been thinking a lot the last few days about how children learn. I've been watching them as they go through their days, observing how they interact with their environment. And I've realized anew how very important it is to have free time to explore their own interests, test their skills and abilities, and simply find joy in the world around them. These early preschool years are so important. This is the time when children are laying the foundation of their understanding of the world around them. Each experience is a learning experience as the discover the way the world works. Touching, tasting, climbing, listening to music, stretching imaginations through language rich stories, trial and error - all of these and so much more are vital learning opportunities.
Quote of the Day
Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.
